At Treetop Challenge Currumbin, students don’t read about canopy conditions — they climb 25 metres into them. They don’t watch a video about sustainable design — they spend 90 minutes inside a working example of it. Every program is mapped to the Australian Curriculum V9.0 and comes with a complete Teacher Pack: lesson plans, worksheets, a student workbook, a curriculum alignment statement and a facilitator training guide.

An excursion that earns its place in your program
The Treetop Challenge high-ropes and zipline course at Currumbin is built into living trees up to 25 metres above a remnant subtropical rainforest — so the curriculum content is literally what students can see, touch and feel. Forces, ecosystems, energy transfer, human impact and sustainable design stop being textbook abstractions and become physical experience.
Every program follows the same proven arc: build understanding before the climb, reinforce it during, and consolidate it afterwards. There is a tailored program for each year level from 6 to 9, each developed against the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 across four learning areas — Science, Geography (HASS), Design & Technologies, and Health & Physical Education.

Programs by year level
Each year level has its own focus, mapped to the relevant Australian Curriculum V9.0 content descriptions. All four programs run on the same full-day structure and include the year-specific Teacher Pack.
Year 6 — Rainforest Systems, Human Impact & Sustainable Design
Students investigate how physical conditions shape living things, then experience the difference between forest floor and canopy first-hand. They examine the elevated course as a science solution that lets people access the rainforest without damaging it.

Year 7s classify species, trace energy flow through the rainforest, and feel balanced and unbalanced forces with their whole bodies on the course — one of the hardest Science descriptions to teach without direct experience.

Year 8 — Engineering Nature: Forces, Systems & Sustainable Design
Year 8s handle the volcanic soils that decide what grows here, then ride 15 ziplines and feel the brake heat produced by their own gravitational potential energy. They evaluate the course as a real sustainable-design solution with explicit trade-offs.

Year 9s are treated as analysts: they model the carbon cycle through the forest they just climbed, apply conservation of energy to a real system, and produce a justified, future-focused design proposal as a capstone task suitable for summative reporting.

What a day looks like
A typical program runs 3.5–4 hours and follows the same arc for every year level: arrival and Acknowledgement of Country, two short pre-climb learning modules, a safety and systems briefing, then 90–120 minutes on the course, followed by post-climb modules that turn the experience into curriculum learning.

- Teacher Lesson Plans — six classroom lessons (three pre-excursion, three post-excursion), each with learning intentions, success criteria, the 5E structure, differentiation and assessment notes.

Developed and reviewed by an experienced educator
These programs were created, guided and approved in conjunction with Dr Gemma Dale. Dr Dale teaches Year 9 Science and Years 10–12 Biology at Brisbane State High School, coordinates the school’s Duke of Edinburgh program and is well acquainted with outdoor education. She holds a doctorate in scientific literacy and writes textbooks for Cambridge University Press.
Dr Gemma Dale is an experienced science teacher, education consultant and published textbook author. She has written science textbooks and curriculum resources for multiple Australian states and has extensive experience supporting teachers and students across a range of educational contexts. Her work focuses on evidence-based teaching, curriculum development and creating rigorous, engaging learning opportunities that spark curiosity while helping students connect classroom concepts with the real world.
That means the curriculum links are not marketing — they are built and checked by someone who teaches the standards, runs outdoor programs, and writes the textbooks other teachers use.

Safety and excursion approval
We make your school’s approval process straightforward. Every student is secured by a continuous belay system and fully supervised on course, and we provide the documentation your administration needs:
- Risk assessments for the program.
- Public liability insurance.
- Our Child & Youth Risk Management Strategy (CYRMS).
- All safety equipment — helmet, harness and gloves — provided and supervised on site.
